At over 30 metres tall and weighing over 300 tonnes each, The Kelpies are hard to miss. These incredible equine structures – the largest of their kind – dominate the surrounding area and impose a sense of awe in all who gaze up at them. Where did they come from and how did they come to be in Falkirk? The best way to find all the answers and to admire these magnificent specimens in the flesh – or rather in the steel – is by embarking on The Kelpies Experience Tour. This 45-minute jaunt explores the vision of their creator, Andy Scott, and recounts the story of the working horses in the area who inspired the project. The highlight of the tour, naturally, is the opportunity to step inside a Kelpie and to see the world from behind their eyes. With a purpose-built visitor centre in the advanced stages of construction, the experience is about to get even better. Assembled in late 2013, The Kelpies are a genuine feat of engineering, assembled in just 90 days. The project was commissioned by Scottish Canals, with the name inspired by the mythological water beast known as the kelpie. Andy Scott then turned this vision into reality, designing these colossal structures as a tribute to the heavy horses who pulled the barges and did the grunt work in the early days of Scottish industry. There genuinely is no other visitor experience – in Falkirk or elsewhere – quite like it.

These Kelpies are lovely to look at. The locks on the canal are nice to see too. The area is lovely and is great for walking about and looking at the boats in the canal. I can see the Kelpies from the window of my house as I live near them. I get to see them everyday.

Absolutely amazing this beautiful sculpture was our main reason for coming to Scotland and doing our own mini tour. We we're not disappointed my camera never stopped. A tour of the kelpies is a must and the privilege of going inside this astounding piece of engineering was breathtaking. Our guide on the day was Steve his knowledge and support for the kelpies was brilliant. Thank you again Steve you made us forget about the not so helpful weather. If you have time see the kelpies at night if you think they're amazing in the day you won't be disappointed. A huge thank you must go to Andy Scott for coming up with an amazing sculpture.
